Providing quality snack and meal times at Helmsdale ELC

Helmsdale ELCs quality snack and lunch time experiences have been recognised by the Care Inspectorate who commented in the report under section 1.1 (Nurturing Care and Support) …

“Snack was a positive, relaxing and sociable time for children. They were fully involved in the planning and preparation of snack. They helped staff to carefully set tables with tablecloths and centre pieces. They demonstrated a real sense of pride in the responsibility they had been given. Children were offered a wealth of opportunities for developing independence. They confidently poured their own drinks, were provided with opportunities for choice and responsibly placed their plates in the dishwasher. Staff sat with children during snack encouraging rich discussions, supporting language and communication skills”

The involvement and independence that the children have at both the snack and lunch time experiences, the homely touches that are added to enhance the “home from home” experience and in general the positive social interactions of the snack and lunch time can be seen in the photos.

In response to the report the Headteacher said “I am so delighted that the hard work and dedication of our ELC staff has been recognised by Care Inspectorate and highlighted as good practice. Our nursery setting is a warm and welcoming space with lovely homely touches. Snack time is a real treat for the children- they’re given ownership and thrive on the responsibility of helping to prep the food!

I found the tablecloths beautiful vase of flowers quite hilarious to begin with- it’s like being back in Grandmas house, and the introduction of real crockery and glasses was nerve wracking at first but we can really see the benefits of all the changes and the children take pride in looking after things.”
