For children who attend more than one setting for their funded Early Learning and Childcare it is important that we have processes in place whereby we can share relevant information in order to best meet each child’s needs.

Each setting should seek consent from the child’s parents/carers for any information sharing. Sharing information with blended placements template.

Tracking Children’s Progress

Ensuring children make progress in their development and learning is a vital part of the work we do in our settings everyday.  All settings should develop an approach to tracking which works for them, although settings are required to complete a Developmental Overview throughout the year for all 3 and 4 year old children to track their individual development.  Examples of how you can gather data to track and analyse children’s progress can be found on the Data and Developmental Overviews page.

When developing an approach to tracking, the emphasis should not be on tools, but on the processes by which ELC managers and Early Years Practitioners (EYPs) can get to know each child and their progress in learning and development.

In Highland, we have developed Principles of Effective tracking in Highland ELC to support ELC settings develop effective tracking approaches.  We have also developed a short training video with slides that can be accessed as part of continuing professional learning.

Access the Tracking and Monitoring Chart here.

In addition, we have Literacy and Numeracy progression frameworks (see links below) which aim to support practitioners in planning for learning, teaching and assessment in the Early Level and can also be used as tools to track children’s learning.
